August results: +30.5% ROI and one clear lesson

Month overview

August closed out with 11 bets: 7 wins, 1 half-win, 2 losses, and 1 void. That added up to +4.58 units of profit on 15 units staked, for a monthly ROI of +30.5% — a strong month, though the more interesting part is what's actually behind that number.

What went well: Asian handicap bets

Breaking the bets down by market type shows a clear pattern. Asian handicap bets (Rapid -0.75, Rapid -1, FCI Levadia fh -0.75, Tammeka 0, Levadia -0.75, Azzurri -0.75, Welco -0.75) went out 7 times in August, and not one of them lost — 5 wins, 1 half-win, and 1 void. That's +5.86 units of profit on 10 units staked, or +58.6% ROI.

That's not luck. The Asian handicap market fits especially well with spots where I know precisely why one team should be better than the other — squad quality, home advantage, form — and the handicap lets that read translate into the bet far more directly than a plain 1x2.

What went badly: goals markets

The remaining four bets (South Melbourne ET over 3.5 Corners, Elva vs Maardu over 2, Nõmme Kalju U21 - Welco over 4.25, Lions team goals over 5) were all over/under-type markets, and they went the opposite way — 2 wins, 2 losses, for a combined -1.28 units, or -25.6% ROI.

The month's single biggest loss came from exactly this group: Elva vs Maardu over 2, a 2-unit bet that finished at -2.00. Predicting total goals is inherently less stable than a handicap bet — it depends more on randomness (as I wrote in the xG guide), so even a correct read on the game swings around more in the result.

What this means for September

I'm not saying goals markets should be dropped entirely — two months is far too small a sample to draw hard conclusions from. But August confirmed once again why the Asian handicap is the core of my strategy: when I know why a team should win, the handicap translates that read into the bet most directly.

I'll be more selective with goals markets going forward — only when the specific game state (weak defences, an open game, motivation) clearly justifies it, not just because the price looks good.
